Parable of the Net

Matthew 13:47-50

What we think of the afterlife affects the way we live today. In this parable Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a fishing net that will pull up everything. The image would have been a familiar one to his disciples as many were fishermen. When we think of fishing we think of a fishing pole with a single hook. You pick your spot and you pick your depth and you pick your bait because you’re targeting a very particular fish. When you use a net, there is no discrimination. Anything and everything gets dragged up with it. You might find an old shoe, an old tire, or some other trash along with the fish in the net. This is why Jesus uses this analogy – the net gets everything, whether good, bad or indifferent. When that day comes, everything changes for everyone.
