Advent Season: The Scandal of the Incarnation

During the Christmas advent season this year we will look at the birth of Jesus in terms of the scandalous idea of God becoming man and taking on flesh. This was a stumbling block to the Jews of the 1st Century and to many people still today. Looking through church history, especially the first few centuries, also alerts us to how difficult this doctrine was to accept and understand. Understanding it rightly has all kinds of implications for the way we live today. Here’s the specifics we’ll cover for the Sundays of Advent.

  • 1st Sunday of Advent (11/28): The Scandal of Servanthood (Philippians 2:1-11)
  • 2nd Sunday of Advent (12/5): The Scandal of Flesh (John 1:1-18)
  • 3rd Sunday of Advent (12/12): The Scandal of a Man Being God (Colossians 1:15-23)
  • 4th Sunday of Advent (12/19): The Scandal of Condescension (Hebrews 1:1-4)

One Comment On “Advent Season: The Scandal of the Incarnation”

  1. I am really looking forward to this series.
What is really scandalous, in our selfish society, is that it was all done for His own glory and His own pleasure.

    Soli Deo Gloria!
