A Power for You
When it comes to Christmas, everyone puts together their wish list. Sometimes we address it to Santa and hope that he comes through. He consults his naughty and nice list to see where you fit. It’s typical conditional arrangement. Since Santa is associated with Christmas (Saint Nick), we tend to transfer that conditional arrangement to God. “Am I on God’s naughty or nice list? If I’m on the nice list, will he answer my prayers?”
In this passage we find a favorite verse, “ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Does a Christian really have that kind of power? Will God really do whatever we wish if we just ask? The Bible says it and yet we don’t seem to experience it and so we conclude one of two things: God doesn’t really work that way or, I must be on the naughty list.
As we’ll see in this passage, there is no naughty list. But there is other imagery. Instead of Santa and his list, we are given an image of a vine, a vinedresser, and branches.
