Broken Structures of the World
In these verses we find snapshots of life that highlight the vexation of the Qoheleth, indeed of anyone who is willing to stop and consider the broad range of human experiences. What’s particularly interesting is how these snapshots immediately follow the Qoheleth’sadvice when handling yourself in the house of God. It’s as though he seeks to highlight the inconsistency of a faith in God with the observations we make of the world outside the house of God.
You could also compare this change of scenery to the idealistic young college graduate in his 20s to the scarred and cynical skeptic of his 30s. How do you cope with it?
