Ingredients for Godliness: Marital Faithfulness
Last week we saw that one of the contributors for the downward trend of godliness is our treatment of God’s Word. Another is marital faithfulness. While we might think of some practical reasons as to why this is, such as the devastating affects on the family or society, Malachi ties to something of even more importance. He ties it to their relationship with God.
“You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. But you say, ‘Why does he not?’ Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless,”
God no longer regards their offering because of their marital unfaithfulness. He links their closeness to God, their godliness, with their unfaithfulness to their wives. Not only that, but he ties the godliness of their children to their marital faithfulness in verse 15. We’ll consider this more in a minute. The point is simply this: Godliness is linked to marital faithfulness.
