Road to Glory
The news keeps getting better. Not only are you not condemned and given the Spirit to empower a new life, but you become a son of God and heir of God alongside Christ. Glory is in your future. It is hard to imagine a greater place to be!
But now, as we come to this passage, Paul takes an interesting turn. For on the path to this future glory is suffering. This is what we see in Romans 8:17
…[we are] heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Why does he turn to suffering? So far, Paul has been wresting us away from a false understanding of our relationship to the law so that we might not miss the good news nor miss the empowered life promised with the giving of the Holy Spirit. That danger, while important, is a danger in the mind. It’s theological. Suffering is a different kind of threat. It is a threat to the body on earth. Can God’s wondrous gospel take us through them? Here is what he has to say about that.
