Shout for Joy! (Ps 33)
This psalm reminds us that God is in control and he can be trusted. This is why the Psalm is a call for the people to praise him. It is a song of joy, a song of exuberance! It is not so much teaching that you should praise God, it is an invitation to turn your eyes to the wonder and power of God which will inevitably move you to praise. So we see in the opening lines,
33 Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
2 Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
This invitation whets your curiosity, if you’re paying attention. Why are we to shout for joy? What is this Psalmist so excited about? Obviously something has got him giddy, what is it? It is the joy of knowing that your God is God.
