Sower, Seeds, and Soil
Listen!… I have a secret to tell you. It’s a secret for husbands and wives. It’s a secret that reveals the key to a long-lasting and intimate marriage. Want to hear it? Listen! Did you hear it? Listen again…Listen! How many of you heard it that time?
Learning to listen well is the key to a happy marriage. Learning to listen for the meaning behind the words is what I’m talking about. Listening in this way is not easy to do. It takes a lot of work. You have to pay attention, use the context for discernment, and earnestly seek to understand. Marriage problems often occur because spouses learn to tune each other out, for one reason or another. You grow distant and you reach a point in your marriage where real communication is impossible. Hearts become hard and everything you hear gets filtered through that lens. It’s devastating.
I use that illustration because it is also key to walking with Jesus. He tells us as much. He begins his teaching in this passage with that very word: listen. And that word is the lesson for us.
Paul explains in Romans,
…faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17)
