The Eighth Commandment

The commandments do at least two things for us. The first is that they show us the fruit of sin. The fruit of sin addressed by the 8th commandment is theft. As we’ve seen with the other commandments, there is a sin in the heart that leads us to stealing. We need to understand exactly what this sin is. As we do, we’ll see that it is not God that squashes our fun by forbidding sin, but rather our sin that squashes our joy by keeping us in bondage.

The second is that they show us the character of God. The character of God revealed in the 8th commandment is his radical generosity. We’ll look at that too.

Because God is radically generous toward you, you shall not steal.
