The Great Commandment

We’ve been looking at the Ten Commandments. This morning we’ll pause to consider the greatest commandment. In Matthew, the Pharisees get together and an expert in the law asks Jesus, “which is the greatest commandment?” perhaps with the hope that Jesus would single one out and thus nullify the rest of them. That was already their accusation against Him. Yet Jesus doesn’t nullify any of them. Instead He gives us great insight to understanding the overarching context of all of them – the “hinge” upon which all operates.

The operative word of course in Jesus summation of the law is “love”. You shall love the Lord. You shall love your neighbor. Love is the key to understanding what it means to be a Christian.
