Mark 10:17-31

There is an ancient proverb that says:

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. (Proverbs 16:25)

In the seventh grade school work came easy and I prided myself on competing for the top grade in every class. One day in English we were given an assignment that had us read a short story and, in teams, answer a sheet of questions. I gathered some of the other top students and we jumped right into the assignment thinking we we finish first. The first question was a piece of cake and we zoomed ahead. The next question was a bit more challenging and we had to do some digging. The 3rd question was another easy one. Then the next was another tough one. And as we made our way through about half of the sheet, I noticed one team had set their pencils down. They were finished. I couldn’t believe it! The another team finished and another and soon, the teacher called time. We still had a few questions unanswered so I pleaded for more time. None was given. When I continued to protest she asked if I had read the directions. The assignment had seemed straight forward so I hadn’t. As she continued to press me to read them I discovered that we were to only answer the odd questions, which were the easy ones, and then quietly set down your pencil and wait without helping other teams. There is a way that seems right but in the end leads to failure. It was a valuable lesson.

There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end leads to death.

When it comes to the way of salvation, that proverb is so true. It’s not just that there is a way that seems right to a man, but that there is a way that seems right to almost all. As Jesus explains in Matthew 7:13-14

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

What must I do to inherit eternal life?
